700 passengers and 160 tonnes of cargo
A real feat from IHC Merwede Offshore & Marine was the design of a hybrid ship for 700 passengers and 160 tonnes of cargo space (60 tonnes of which for the refrigerated transport of exotic fruit). This ship is intended for short international sea travel in the island-strewn seas around India, but similar vessels could also be deployed in China, Indonesia, Polynesia and the Caribbean. The ship has a service speed of 17 knots and the sea area in which she is required to operate calls for excellent manoeuvrability, even at shallow draught. In view of the area of deployment, the design was subject to strict environmental requirements. For its passengers, the ship offers accommodation in three classes, ranging from extremely luxurious VIP suites to simple dormitory accommodation. All accommodation is however, fully air-conditioned. The on-board facilities also include restaurants, cafeterias, children’s play areas, prayer rooms, shops and laundries.
